In May 2020 education software giant Blackbaud experienced a cyber-attack but details of the severity of the data breach didn’t fully emerge until July of the same year. Blackbaud initially said that no financial information had been taken and attempted to pay off the hackers to delete the stolen data. The company tried to play down the incident even though equally sensitive information was leaked in some cases, including:
Blackbaud was then in a regulatory filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission and revealed that after completing a forensic investigation into the breach, the hackers had gained more access to data than previously thought. For some of the notified customers the hacker might have accessed some unencrypted files that were intended for bank account information, social security/national insurance numbers, usernames, and/or passwords.
The new findings from the investigation do not apply to all customers who were involved in the Blackbaud security breach. Customers who were believed to be using those fields for financial and account information have been contacted and provided with additional support according to Blackbaud. Worldwide, it has been reported that millions of people have been warned that they could have been affected by the breach.
If you are one of the Blackbaud customers or 166 organisations in the UK who have been affected by the data breach then you are entitled to make a claim for GDPR compensation. Anyone whose personal data was part of the hack should have been notified by Blackbaud by the latest September of 2020.
We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of Blackbaud customers. If you are a Blackbaud customer and received notification about involvement in the data breach, you are eligible to join our group claim.
Compensation is payable, not only for any specific financial or other losses you have incurred, but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you open to the risk of fraudulent activity.
The ICO have been involved in the matter and have said their investigation is ongoing with no official findings reported yet. As well as a significant number of schools, colleges and universities, organisations affected by the hack include charities, human rights campaigns, public radio stations and religious groups. Some of the most high-profile victims include:

Data breach experts
We use dedicated data breach solicitors who have handled thousands of data breach claims
Customers have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation, such as Blackbaud, is securely stored and handled. Especially for large organisations like universities and charities or have a large amount of personal and sensitive information. When data protection standards have fallen short, and in this case a hack has enabled unauthorised access to your personal data, you can make a claim for compensation.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures to ensure that such a breach cannot occur again. Blackbaud has stated that they are expecting their security incident investigation and security enhancements to continue for the foreseeable future. Hopefully, there will be significant improvements to their security system in future to prevent any risk of another hack.
Data regulations mean that you have a right to compensation for non-material damage. This means those affected are entitled to compensation for the stress, frustration, and anxiety associated with the breach. The universities have a clear duty of care to ensure that their staff and students who hand over their confidential information to them have their data secured and protected, are not exposed as has happened here in this attack. There is a strong element of trust that has been broken by the Blackbaud breach which could, through no fault of their own, affect the reputation and perception of the organisations impacted.
If you think you may have a valid Blackbaud data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries regarding your claim and confirm whether or not you have a case worth pursuing.
We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the thousands of customers can be part of a collective claim for Blackbaud data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the Blackbaud data breach.
Our recommended experts will act for you on a No Win, No Fee basis, meaning there is no risk to you in making a claim and nothing to pay in the unlikely event we take on your claim and you don’t win compensation. We can help you receive the maximum amount of compensation for your Blackbaud data breach claim, so if you’ve received notification about the data breach, or think that your personal data may have been part of the breach, be sure to start a claim with us.
