Between June 2017 and April 2018 pregnancy and parenting club Bounty breached the Data Protection Act 1998 by disclosing personal data with third parties for direct marketing purposes without being fully clear to users that it might do so. Nearly 35 million pieces of personal data were revealed including:
Due to the nature of the company, the primary victims of the data loss were mothers and pregnant women who registered with Bounty, as well as sensitive information being disclosed about young children.
If you are one of the 14 million people who have been affected by the Bounty data breach then you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. Anyone whose personal data was part of the hack should have been notified by Bounty in 2018.
We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of Bounty users. If you are a Bounty user and received notification about involvement in the data breach, you are eligible to join our group claim.
Even though no financial information was disclosed compensation is still payable for any distress you may have experienced as a result of the data breach. Particularly for mothers and pregnant women who had vulnerable information in Bounty about their children, the thought of those details being shared would be extremely upsetting. Also, it increases the risk of phishing attacks so there would be anxiety about their data being misused for fraudulent activities.
The investigation into the matter by the ICO led to a substantial fine of £400,000 for Bounty. While any compensation is unrelated to the actual amount of the fine, the fact that they were given a penalty greatly enhances the prospect of a successful Bounty data breach compensation claim.

Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures and ensure they are adhering to the Data Protection Act 1998 to make sure that such a breach does not occur again.
Data regulations mean that you have a right to compensation for non-material damage. This means those affected are entitled to compensation for the stress, frustration, and anxiety associated with the breach.
In this case the investigation by the ICO into Bounty found that for online registrations, Bounty’s privacy notices had a reasonably clear description of the organisations they might share information with, but none of the four largest recipients of Acxiom, Equifax, Indicia, and Sky were listed. Also, none of the merchandise pack claim cards and offline registration methods had an opt-in for marketing purposes.
If you think you may have a valid Bounty data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries regarding your claim and confirm whether or not you have a case worth pursuing.
Our recommended experts will act for you on a No Win, No Fee basis, meaning there is no risk to you in making a claim and nothing to pay in the unlikely event we take on your claim and you don’t win compensation. We can help you receive the maximum amount of compensation for your Bounty data breach claim, so if you’ve received notification about the data breach, or think that your personal data may have been part of the breach, be sure to start a claim with us.
