A cyber attack targeting Cambridge Water’s parent company South Staffordshire PLC, which also runs South Staffordshire Water, has potentially put both employees and customers at risk of identity fraud.
The Walsall-based company, which operates water supplies and distributes safe drinking water to 1.3 million people, has been a victim of a large-scale cyber attack.
In a letter to employees and customers, the company confirmed that personal data was compromised following the attack. The breach occurred when a ransomware group hacked into their IT network, subsequently compromising employee and customer data.
The hack is known to have occurred on 16th August 2022, but it was not until 29th November 2022 that a letter from Cambridge Water was sent to all those customers affected.
The details of South Staffs Water customers accessed by the hackers included:

Those impacted by the South Staffordshire Water data breach can make a claim for data breach compensation for the inconvenience, distress, annoyance and failing their legal obligations of keeping private data safe. If you are one of the employees or customers impacted by the data breach then you are entitled to make a claim.
South Staffs Water released a statement regarding the breach on 17th August 2022 and contacted all affected people on 29th November 2022, and have continued to gather information since then on the potential impact of the breach. Needless to say, the impact of this breach is far-reaching, and it’s unknown whether or not customers’ trust will ever recover. Nonetheless, the managing director of south Staffordshire plc acknowledges the failure of their firm to protect customer data.
Peter Hammond at Data-Breach.com said his team understood that the data stolen in the cyber attack on South Staffs Water customers’ is visible on the dark web, posing a significant threat to any individuals harmed.
“The information that we have received from clients regarding the South Staffordshire Water data breach is extremely worrying,” he said.
“When any company of such large scale experiences a data breach, it means a significant amount of personal data is likely at serious risk of being misused.”
“When it comes to financial data being in jeopardy, individuals can fall victim to identity or takeover fraud. Criminals can then use this information to extract funds from the victim’s bank account, as well as buy products and services, leading to both financial loss and emotional distress. This problem can be exacerbated by the timing in the run-up to Christmas which is historically the busiest time for banking transactions.”
