In August 2015 Carphone Warehouse suffered a cyber attack which led to the exposure of around 2.5 million customers, affecting their e2save.com, Mobiles.co.uk, and OneStopPhoneShop.com websites. The compromised data included names, current and previous addresses, birth dates, marital statuses and in some cases bank details.
It is also thought that as many as 900,000 of the people impacted by the breach might have also had encrypted credit card information stolen, which put them at higher risk of fraud and phishing attacks.
As a result, in 2018 the ICO (Information Commissioner’s Office) fined Carphone Warehouse £400,000 for the data breach. This fine was based on rules that were in place prior to the introduction of the GDPR in 2018, hence why it might seem quite small in comparison to other fines issued to big organisations in similar cases such as British Airways and Marriott.
If you have been notified by Carphone Warehouse, or one of the other mobile businesses/brands by email, text, or letter that your data was involved in the breach, you could be entitled to make a claim for compensation. The data breach affected three different categories of Carphone Warehouse customers:
We can put you in contact with expert data breach solicitors who are starting a collective group claim that will bring together those affected by the Carphone Warehouse data breach. If you are a Carphone Warehouse customer and received notification that your data was part of the breach, you are eligible to make a claim.
Compensation can be received, not just for financial or other material losses you may have incurred, but also for any emotional distress caused by the breach which might have left you vulnerable and exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity and lack of control over who can see your data now.

Customers have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation, such as Carphone Warehouse, is securely stored and handled. Especially for large organisations like Carphone Warehouse that span across multiple websites and other businesses that use their IT system and carry personal information.
The fine given by the ICO reflects the vulnerabilities in Carphone Warehouse’s security systems. Making a claim for compensation will hold them accountable for these inadequacies and encourage them to make the necessary changes to securely protect and store the customer data they are collecting from their customers.
If you think you might have a valid claim against Carphone Warehouse contact us today and we will put you in touch with experienced data breach specialist solicitors who can help. They will make enquiries on your behalf and determine whether or not you have a claim that can be taken further.
Our recommended experts will act for you on a No Win, No Fee basis, meaning there is no risk to you in making a claim and you won’t have to pay anything in the unlikely event we pursue your claim, and you don’t win compensation.
