In 2020 contacts app Covve experienced a data breach in which the data of around 90,000 users was compromised by a third party who gained unauthorised access to a legacy system before it was decommissioned. When Covve investigated the incident, they stated that the contact data such as names and contact details e.g., email addresses and phone numbers were accessed, the data cannot be directly associated to specific users and no passwords were affected.
If you are one of the 90,000 users whose data was involved in the Covve breach you are eligible to make a claim for data breach compensation. We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of Covve users who were part of the breach.
The biggest problem with this data breach incident is that it can affect people who have had nothing to do with the app. For example, if someone had your phone number and email address and used the Covve app your data would have been leaked as well as theirs.
Compensation is payable not only for specific financial or other losses you have experienced but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity.

Data breach experts
We use dedicated data breach solicitors who have handled thousands of data breach claims
People have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation, such as Covve, is securely stored and handled. When data protection standards have fallen short, and in this case a hack has enabled unauthorised access to your personal data, you can make a claim for compensation.
Since the Covve app scraped the internet for details of the contacts users added into the app, the size of the breach could be a lot bigger than the 90,000 users. Unfortunately, there is not really anything people can do about this problem, especially because a lot of the data taken belonged to those who had nothing to do with the app.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures to ensure that such a breach cannot occur again.
If you think you may have a valid Covve data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries for you and confirm whether or not you have a valid claim worth pursuing.
We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the large number of the app users can be part of a collective claim for Covve data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the data breach.
