Date the breach occured
Between July 2017 and April 2018, a hack occurred that saw over 10 million customer records accessed. The information stolen by the hackers included:
These details all could have led to fraudulent activity by criminals by phishing scams for example. Dixons blamed the data breach on a hack carried out using malicious software that affected over 5,300 tills in branches of Curry’s, PC World and Dixons Travel. The vulnerability went undetected for around 9 months, with the company later revealing that 5.9 million credit card numbers were among the millions of pieces of data that potentially had been accessed. By July 2018, the number of customer records that had been compromised was revealed to have amounted to far more than had at first been thought, being at least 10 million.
If you are one of the 10 million Dixons customers who have been affected by the data breach you are entitled to claim compensation. Anyone whose personal data was part of the hack should have been notified by Dixons in 2018.
We can put you in contact with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together a large number of Dixons customers. If you were a customer of Dixons between the dates of the hack it is possible you were part of the data breach, even if you did not see or receive a notification about it at the time, so it is still worth getting in touch with us.
Compensation is payable not only for specific financial or other losses you have experienced but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity.

Customers have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation, such as Dixons, is securely stored and handled. When data protection standards have fallen short, and in this case a hack has enabled unauthorised access to your personal data, you can make a claim for compensation.
In this case the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) investigation found that there were “systemic failures” in the way Dixons Carphone, under its full name Dixon Stores Group Retail Limited, looked after its customer data. It stated that the loss of that data was likely to have caused distress to many people since the data breach left them exposed to increased risk of fraud.
The poor security arrangements and inadequate steps taken to protect customer data, lead the ICO to fine Dixons Carphone Warehouse £500,000 in January 2020. The previous year, the ICO fined Carphone Warehouse, part of the same group, £400,000 for similar security vulnerabilities.
If you think you could have a valid Dixons data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in contact with data breach experts who will make enquiries for you and confirm whether or not you have a valid claim worth pursuing.
We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the large number of customers can be part of a collective claim for Dixons Carphone data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the data breach.
