Data breaches have been increasing both in terms of offences and the number of people affected. Many big companies with poor security arrangements have found themselves at risk of hackers or those with malicious intent.
In 2020, EasyJet had to inform their customers that their company had found itself in a cyber security incident which resulted in millions of clients’ information being exposed to unauthorised accessors. Those affected can now claim compensation against easyJet.
This is what is called a Data Breach, a violation of The Data Protection Act and The General Data Protection Regulation. These pieces of data protection law have been put in place to protect the private information of a company’s customer base. In some distressing cases, it was reported that some customers had had their financial data viewed, leading to many rushing to secure their bank account from a possible attack. Affected customers, irrespective of whether or not they had suffered financial losses, are able to legally claim compensation on the grounds of it being a breach of privacy.

One of the most common consequences of data breaches is unsolicited communications via email from those to whom the information had been seemingly sold for financial gain. These ranged from harmless in a lot of cases, to successful phishing attempts managing to steal information.
If you were amongst the Customers affected and were contacted as a result of the easyjet data breach, then you might be interested in making a claim. By UK law, a company that has suffered a data breach must report it to the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office without unwarranted delay, and within 72 hours. In addition, they also need to contact those affected clients. This, of course, opens the company up to data protection breach compensation claims.
EasyJet complied with this law later than it should have in 2020 and sent an email to the addresses of all those who have been affected. If you know for sure that your email has been registered with EasyJet in the period 2020, then you should find an email. Even if you had taken several Easyjet flights on or before 2020, it’s likely you are on the system. If you don’t remember getting the warning email, it’s entirely possible that it slipped you by and ended up in your junk and spam emails.
Note that you do not need to have suffered money loss to seek compensation and join the EasyJet data breach claims. Plenty claim compensation purely on the grounds of emotional distress and wish to hold easyjet accountable.
A cyber attack targeting EasyJet’s IT systems gained access to the personal details of millions of travellers, including their sensitive travel information. The hack allowed the hackers to get access to the personal data of up to 9 million customers, plus rather worryingly, the credit card numbers of 2,208 flyers.
The hack is known to have occurred in January 2020, but EasyJet did not inform the thousands of customers whose credit card details had been stolen until April. It was only on the 19th of May 2020 that easyjet announced the wider breach that affected millions.
The details of EasyJet customers accessed by the hackers included:
full names
email addresses
travel data, including dates of departure and arrival
credit card numbers of over 2,000 customers
Those affected by the EasyJet data breach can join our group action by making a claim for data breach compensation over the inconvenience, distress, annoyance and loss of control of their data caused by the hack. If you are one of the 9 million customers who have been affected by the data breach then you are entitled to make an EasyJet data breach claim.
EasyJet notified all affected customers about the data breach by the 26th of May 2020, so it is likely that you already know if you are among the millions who could make a claim. Those whose credit card details were accessed could be in line for greater compensation due to the level of inconvenience that may have been caused by the breach.
It doesn’t matter if you ignored or no longer have the communication from EasyJet informing you about the data breach, or perhaps you never received it at all, as there are other forms of information that you could provide to support your claim. Those who booked flights between 17 October 2019 to 4 March 2020 could provide evidence of a booking between the dates in question, plus any financial or other losses could also be proven through the production of bank account statements or other documentation.
The data breach solicitors we introduce you to can assist with your EasyJet compensation claim. The average level of compensation for EasyJet claims has been estimated to be worth around £2,000, while some experts have estimated that the total payout for easyJet data breach compensation could amount to a huge £18 billion.
You could claim compensation worth thousands if your data was affected by the EasyJet hack that occurred in 2020.

Data breach experts
We use dedicated data breach solicitors who have handled thousands of data breach claims
Customers have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with a company or organisation is properly handled. It should be securely stored and not shared without permission. When these standards have not been met and data has been breached, or in this case illegally accessed, you can make a claim for compensation.
Making a data breach claim against EasyJet not only gets you the compensation you deserve but also means that the company or organisation is held to account. As a result this will force them to take action and bring in more robust data security measures to ensure that such a breach does not happen again.
In the case of EasyJet, the breach was significant, potentially affecting many millions of flyers who had booked tickets with the budget airline. If you were one of those whose credit card details were also accessed then this could have caused a significant headache and potential financial loss for which you have a right to be compensated.
We work with solicitors who are putting together a group claim whereby the large number of EasyJet customers can be part of a collective claim for compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress that may have been caused by the data breach. The exposure of customers’ travel plans, which occurred in some cases, could be considered significant as it posed a potential security risk and would be considered a gross invasion of privacy.
The short answer is no, especially since EasyJet is back in the news due to their mass-cancelling of flights, leading to a renewed uproar.
If you have suffered from the easyjet data breach and are wondering if you can make a data breach claim, then you should know you have six-year maximum to take action. However, this only applies to non-public bodies, meaning private businesses just like Easyjet. For public bodies, however, such as the police department, you need to begin a claim within a year.
The reason there is so much time being afforded is due to the nature of a solicitor’s job. The vast majority of time being spent on any individual data breach case will mostly be them collecting evidence to use in the case.
Another common question is how long it takes for a successful claim to finalize, and this is heavily linked to why so much time is given to solicitors. In some instances, data breach claims have taken about five or six months to complete. But in other instances, especially those with big companies like EasyJet, you will find that it can take several years for a decision to be made. Due to the amount of claims coming in, multiple group action claims have risen against the company. Join our easyjet data breach compensation claim today.
Data Breaches are compensated in one of two ways, depending on what types of damages have been suffered by the claimant.
Material Damages – These types of damages are claimed when someone has experienced financial damages as a result of having your data breached, such as having their credit card data stolen.
Non-Material Damages – These types of damages are claimed when someone has experienced psychological damages as a result of the private information being exposed.
Non-material damages are the most Easyjet customers are claiming compensation for, and it’s possible to get up to £115,730. Such claims usually require medical examinations. The information given during the examinations will be considered in court.
That being said, every claim is unique and each individual has their own circumstances that modify the results of every decision in court. Solicitors determine the range in which you may be able to get for compensation by following the Judicial College Guidelines.
The following has been taken from the guidelines published in April of 2022 for Psychiatric Damage:
Moderate – The data breach has causes psychological trauma, but the effects can be mitigated through can improve with the help of medical professionals. The possible compensation ranges from £5,860 to £19,070.
Moderately Severe – The data breach has caused psychological trauma to the extent that it affects your everyday life. It may cause issues with work, for instance, or sleep. The possible compensation awarded ranges from £19,070 to £54,830.
Severe – This level of psychological trauma is described as rendering a person unable to cope with life. Possible compensation ranges from £54,830 to £115,730.
The following has been taken from the guidelines published in April of 2022 for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder:
Less Severe – PTSD is severe enough to last around two years. Compensation awards range from £3,950 to £8,180.
Moderately Severe – The PTSD caused is severe enough to cause disability and required professional help. Compensation awards range from £23,150 to £59,860.
