A breach occurred at Equiniti, a company who provide support to manage company pensions. During the incident hundreds of annual benefit statements of Sussex police officers were sent to the wrong addresses. In the wrong hands this highly sensitive and personal data could be used to carry out illegal activities such as identity fraud and financial theft.
The nature of the information contained in the compromised statements was personal and highly sensitive data. The data breach was caused purely because the correct systems weren’t in place and new address information provided by Sussex Police wasn’t updated on systems by Equiniti. When statements were sent out, many ended up going to the wrong house.
While it is known what addresses the statements ended up being incorrectly sent to, there is no guarantee that those who received the statements, intended for the police officers, disposed of them immediately and in a secure way, such as shredding them. Information such as Name, Date of Birth, and National Insurance number can be highly useful to those looking to carry out fraudulent activity using someone else’s identity.
If you are one of the 750 police officers who have been affected by the Equiniti data breach you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of Sussex police officers who were part of the breach.
Compensation is payable not only for specific financial or other losses you have experienced but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity.
