In February 2020, Styles and Wood Ltd went into liquidation and Ernst and Young LLP (EY) were appointed as administrators. Then in May 2020, EY published documents by mistake that contained around 80 other employees of Styles and Wood Ltd. This mistake meant that names, addresses, and the amount of money owed to those employees was disclosed. Those whose data was affected in the breach would have received a letter dated 18th May 2020 informing them of the incident with an apology from EY.
If you are one of the 80 employees of Styles and Woods Ltd whose data was compromised by Ernst and Young LLP you could make a claim for compensation. As EY have apologised and acknowledge the security incident took place those involved can seek compensatory damages.
The exposure of personal data also increases the risk of fraud, with cyber criminals attempting to carry out fraudulent activity using your personal details. You do not have to have suffered any financial losses to claim compensation, as any settlement would also consider the level of distress and inconvenience that might have been caused by a breach.

Anyone sharing their personal data with any organisation, such as a professional services company, has the right to expect that the information is handled effectively, securely stored and not shared with unauthorised persons. When data protection standards are not met and a data breach has occurred, you can make a compensation claim.
As the data controller EY should have complied with their data protection obligations and ensured the safety and security of the personal information they were handling, and so prevented it from being unlawfully disclosed. EY have breached the employee’s rights to privacy of their personal data, lost control of personal information, failed to process the information in a way that ensures sufficient security in accordance with the GDPR, and breached the confidence of the affected employees. As a result, EY are potentially liable in law to pay compensation.
If you think you may have a valid claim for data breach against Ernst and Young LLP then get in touch with us. We will put you in touch with data breach experts who will work for you on a No Win, No Fee basis. This means there is no risk in making a claim and nothing to pay in the unlikely event we take on your claim and you don’t win compensation.
