How was data breached at Foxtons?

In January 2021, London-based estate agents Foxtons experienced a significant data breach. An investigation found that 16,000 customer card details and addresses were put on the dark web as well as correspondence relating to the breach. However, Foxtons did not make customers aware of the breach, no warning or communication of any kind to say that criminals had accessed and exposed their data. Currently, the data that has been found on the dark web only affects customers from prior to 2010 but this could only be a small portion of the data that was stolen from Foxtons.

The attackers have claimed they released only 1% of the stolen data, so they could be selling more recent records secretly, meaning the 16,000 customer records we are aware of that were found on the dark web could be just scratching the surface.
