In 2021 the firearms dealer and gun trader experienced a data breach when their database was accessed by an unauthorised third party. The database contained the personal information of about 110,000 users that were registered between 2016 and 2021. The database was then published on the dark web by the hackers, compromising the safety and security of those that have been affected. Guntrader has actively cooperated and reacted to the breach by quickly informing their users as well as communicating with the relevant authorities like the ICO and NCA.
The database that was published by the hackers was said to include names, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, and user’s geolocation data. Also, logs of payments might have been part of the breach, but it has been reported that this didn’t include credit card information.

If you are one of the many users affected by the Guntrader data breach you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. Unlike other data breach claims where there is a substantial delay between a breach being discovered and those involved being informed, in this case users were notified promptly. Nevertheless, there is still a significant risk to victims posed by the breach, and this is why if you have been informed that your data was involved in the Guntrader breach you should be extra vigilant against further fraud and make a Guntrader data breach compensation claim.
Keep in mind that compensation is payable, not only for any specific financial or other losses you have incurred, but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could mean you’re exposed to greater risk of fraudulent activity.
The unauthorised access to Guntrader’s database was reported to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) who will carry out their own investigation and depending on their findings and the extent to which more could have been done to prevent the incident, could find the company. Any compensation would be separate from the fine although a substantial fine would demonstrate the seriousness of the breach and support the case for compensation.

Starting a data breach claim not only helps you get the compensation you deserve, but also holds a company accountable for their actions. As a result, this will typically give them the push they need to take the important steps to boost their data security procedures to make sure that such a breach will not happen again.
Rules and regulations that are in place around data mean that you are entitled to compensation for damage that is non-material. This means those impacted are eligible to claim compensation for the distress, annoyance, and anxiety associated with the breach.
Also, as well as the loss of privacy, that users will experience because of the Guntrader data breach, it throws up a number of safety concerns. This is because gun ownership is tightly controlled in the UK, making firearms very difficult to get and extremely valuable on the black market. If criminals can access the data relating to users who own guns, there is a higher risk that they will be targeted.
If you are worried about the breach, you should be very vigilant of any unexpected communications, like emails, phone calls, or text messages, especially if they look like they are coming from someone saying they represent Guntrader.uk. These could be ‘phishing’ attacks that are designed to use basic details to convince you of legitimacy and then get further information from you so the criminal can commit further fraud, potentially gaining access to your bank accounts.
There are various things you can do to lower the risk of cybercriminals using your personal data against you. For example, straight after a breach you should contact your bank and/or credit card company, change your passwords, install up to date internet security software if you don’t have it already, and speak to a data breach claims specialist like us. Other important steps you should take include:
