Date the breach occured
In October 2021, the Labour Party became aware that they had experienced a serious data breach when a third party that was responsible for handling membership data on their behalf was subject to a cyber attack. The result of this was a large number of members’ data was left inaccessible across the party’s systems. This typically occurs in cases of ransomware attacks.
The Labour Party did not release any details about the specific nature of the breach or how it happened. It has also been unclear exactly what information was compromised during the incident. The only thing the Party has said is that the data included information provided to the Party by its members, registered, and affiliated supporters, and other individuals.
If you were affected and your data was involved in the Labour data breach, you would have been informed by the party shortly after the incident happened. The Party revealed that it wrote to those who were compromised and provided advice on the steps they can take next to protect themselves from further fraudulent activity.
We can put you in touch with professional data breach solicitors who are putting together a group claim that will join the substantial number of people who were part of this breach.
Compensation can be awarded not only in cases where financial losses have occurred, but also when victims have suffered significant emotional distress as a result of the incident. The uncertainty caused by not knowing who can see your personal data or even what pieces of data they have been able to access is justifiably cause for stress and concern.
What should I do if my data has been involved in the Labour Party breach?
Change your passwords
One of the first and easiest steps you can take to protect yourself after your data has been breached is to change your passwords. You should do this for both the Labour Party and anywhere else that you might have used the same password.
Ideally, you should always use a different password for each place your data is held. If you are worried about trying to remember several passwords, you could use a password manager to safely keep them for you.
Get up to date security software
Internet security software focuses on protecting people against a broader range of threats than just viruses. The majority of providers now include options to help protect customers against fraud, so ensuring you have up to date security software is vital.
Register with the Cifas Protective Registration Service
If you have been notified that your data has been stolen or you are concerned about this possibility, you can register with the Cifas fraud prevention service. This will mean your personal details will be highlighted in their National Fraud Database which is used by a lot of companies to check for people who are at risk of fraud.
