In August 2021, the document management firm Stor-a-File was involved in a data breach that compromised the data of 13 organisations it electronically held information for, one of which was Lister Fertility Clinic. In a letter sent to around 1,700 affected patients, the clinic confirmed that it used Stor-a-File for scanning their patients’ and partners’ medical records and had been advised by the firm in October about the hack. The letter stated that the affected data included:
Even though the letter stressed that no data belonging to Lister patients had been released and Stor-a-File had been told by the cyber criminals that they “don’t intend to release medical records on the dark web”, the clinic said there was obviously no guarantee that this wouldn’t happen.
If you are one of the 1,700 Lister Fertility Clinic patients that have been affected by this data breach, you could be eligible to make a claim for compensation. We can put you in contact with experienced data breach solicitors who are building a group claim that will bring together the large number of Lister Clinic patients whose personal data was impacted by this breach.
Compensation can be given not only for specific financial losses you may have incurred, but also for any emotional distress caused by the incident which means that your most intimate and sensitive information is vulnerable and at risk of being viewed and shared to anyone as well as leaving you open to further fraudulent activity.

Data breach experts
We use dedicated data breach solicitors who have handled thousands of data breach claims
Patients seeking medical treatment have the right to expect any personal or financial data they have shared with an organisation, like Lister Fertility Clinic, to be securely handled and stored. When data protection standards have not been met and in this case a hack has allowed an unauthorised third party to access your personal data, you could make a claim for compensation.
It was reported that notorious cyber criminals known as CI0p, were responsible for the attack. They took advantage of outdated and vulnerable server software being used by Stor-a-File and demanded a £3 million ransom in Bitcoin cryptocurrency, which Stor-a-File refused to pay. This led to CI0p releasing tens of thousands of files onto the dark web, but it is not certain whether the criminals stuck to their word of not releasing medical records like the ones from Lister Fertility Clinic.
Despite no financial information being breached in this case the distress victims would experience from knowing their personal data has been accessed and how it could be used means they are entitled to compensation. Data that is sold on the dark web could lead you more exposed to fraudulent attempts by cybercriminals such as phishing attacks. If you are contacted by anyone claiming to be from Lister Clinic and they try to get more personal information from you, don’t reveal anything until you can confirm their legitimacy.
If you think you may have a valid Lister Fertility Clinic data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries for you and confirm whether or not you have a valid claim worth pursuing.
