Now Pensions suffered a data breach in December 2020 when one of its service partners accidentally posted members’ personal data in a public software forum. The pension provider warned affected members that their names, addresses, dates of birth, email addresses, and National Insurance numbers were posted on the forum. It has been reported that the data breach affected less than 2% of its approximately 1.8 million members. No financial information was reported to be compromised during this breach.
If you are one of the members whose data was involved in the Now Pensions breach, you are eligible to make a claim for compensation. We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of Now Pensions members who were part of the breach.
Compensation is payable, not only for specific financial or other losses you have experienced, but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity.
Now Pensions CEO Patrick Luthi said regarding the breach, “these actions contravened Now Pensions’ procedures, as specified for all staff and contractors. The data was visible only to users of that forum for a short time and was copied by a small number of unknown parties. We reported this incident to The Pensions Regulator and the Information Commissioner’s Office”. He also stated that keeping members data safe is an important priority and that Now Pensions acted as soon as they became aware of the breach.

People have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation, such as Now Pensions, is securely stored and handled. When data protection standards have fallen short, you can make a claim for compensation. There is a lot of trust in financial organisations like pension providers, and Now Pensions betrayed that trust by allowing a simple mistake to be made and compromising their members’ data.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures to ensure that such a breach cannot occur again.
Members who were involved in the incident will have been sent communication from Now Pensions relaying their understanding of the breach and the steps they are taking to mitigate any risk to their data. Now Pensions don’t currently have any evidence that any members’ data is being used by unauthorised third parties.
If you think you may have a valid Now Pensions data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries regarding your claim and confirm whether or not you have a case worth pursuing.
We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the thousands of customers can be part of a collective claim for Now Pensions data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the Now Pensions data breach.
