In October 2021, the Salvation Army sent out a letter to affected individuals stating that personal data was revealed in a breach they suffered earlier in the year. It was reported that a third party accessed portions of the Salvation Army’s IT systems. From there they were able to get to personal data including National Insurance numbers, bank account numbers, sort codes, and personnel information.
The charity responded to the attack by shutting down the ‘intrusion’ and preventing any further unauthorised access. They involved an external cyber security company to investigate the breach as well as notifying the police and other appropriate regulators.

The Salvation Army has stated that there was no evidence of the affected data being misused or that the third party intends to misuse it in the future.
