How was data breached at the Salvation Army?

In October 2021, the Salvation Army sent out a letter to affected individuals stating that personal data was revealed in a breach they suffered earlier in the year. It was reported that a third party accessed portions of the Salvation Army’s IT systems. From there they were able to get to personal data including National Insurance numbers, bank account numbers, sort codes, and personnel information.

The charity responded to the attack by shutting down the ‘intrusion’ and preventing any further unauthorised access. They involved an external cyber security company to investigate the breach as well as notifying the police and other appropriate regulators.

Can I make a data breach claim against the Salvation Army?

If you have been notified by the Salvation Army that your data was involved in this incident, or you have reason to believe this was the case, you could be entitled to claim compensation. The Salvation Army has stated that there was no evidence of the affected data being misused or that the third party intends to misuse it in the future. However, there can’t be any certainty that this will remain true, especially as the impacted information can be considered to be sensitive.

You can claim compensation not only for any financial losses you may have experienced but also the emotional strain the breach has had on you. Having your data breach can leave you at greater risk of further fraudulent activity such as phishing attacks, so it is natural to be worried about this and it can be reflected in your Salvation Army data breach compensation claim. If you know your details are handled and stored by the Salvation Army, you should be particularly vigilant of any emails, phone calls, or communication from anyone claiming to be a representative of the charity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Any business or organisation that collects and stores your personal data has a legal obligation to protect it and ensure it stays out of the hands of unauthorised third parties and cyber criminals. The failure to meet this obligation could mean that people who have had their data breached are entitled to put in a claim for compensation.

In this case, given the nature of the information that has been accessed, there is an increased risk of victims experiencing financial losses and a great deal of stress of your bank details and personal information ending up in the wrong hands. Also, there is the added concern and anxiety of wondering whether their data has been compromised and if they need to take further action to protect themselves.

By starting a data breach claim against the Salvation Army, you would not only be able to seek the compensation you deserve but also hold the organisation accountable for its actions. This should encourage them to take the steps needed to improve their security measures in order to prevent another incident happening again in the future.

If you think you may have a valid Salvation Army data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries regarding your claim and confirm whether or not you have a case worth pursuing.

We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the thousands of customers can be part of a collective claim for Salvation Army data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the data breach.
