Standard Services Connected Limited (SSCL) is the payroll provider for those working in the prison service. In February 2020 they suffered a security incident in which the personal data of prison service employees had been revealed to an unauthorised individual. The data that had been breached included employee names, email addresses, National Insurance numbers, and staff ID numbers. SSCL sent an email to those who had been affected to explain what had happened and what personal information had been exposed as a result of the breach.
This is a serious breach because even though no financial information was disclosed people who work in prisons are in close contact with potentially dangerous criminals. With their data being revealed to a person that is unauthorised to access it, the data could be in the hands of unknown third parties who should not have that information and could put the employees in danger.
If SSCL is your payroll provider and you have received email correspondence from them confirming that your personal data has been exposed you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. We can put you in contact with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the prison service employees who were part of the breach.
Compensation is payable not only for specific financial or other losses you have experienced but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you exposed to the risk of fraudulent activity. Not only that but the exposure of your personal information in this case could put you at risk to harm because of your position in the prison service. So, this is a serious breach that you deserve compensation for if you have been affected.

Employees have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with their payroll provider like SSCL is securely stored and handled. When data protection standards have fallen short you can make a claim for compensation.
SSCL should have, as a data controller, ensured that this personal data was kept protected and secure so that it would not be compromised in accordance with their data protection responsibilities. SSCL have failed to protect the data of those using their payroll services and as a result they are potentially liable under the GDPR for the loss and control of this sensitive information.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures to ensure that such a breach cannot occur again.
If you think you may have a valid SSCL data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries for you and confirm whether or not you have a valid claim worth pursuing.
We can put you in touch with legal experts who are putting together a group claim whereby the large number of prison service employees can be part of a collective claim for SSCL data breach compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any direct financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress caused by the data breach. Any employee who has put their trust in an organisation especially the prison service which can be a dangerous role should have their personal information stored securely and SSCL did not sufficiently do this.
