Back in 2015 TalkTalk experienced a data breach that saw the personal details of 157,000 customers accessed, including the bank account numbers and sort codes of over 15,000 customers. However, skipping ahead to 2019 it was discovered that TalkTalk failed to inform 4,545 customers that their personal data was part of the 2015 breach. These personal details had been available online and easy to find through a Google search since the original incident 4 years prior without the knowledge of those impacted.
The data that had been exposed from all of the TalkTalk customers in the 2015 breach included full names, email addresses, dates of birth, customer numbers, mobile numbers, and in some cases bank details.
When presented with the findings that they had failed to inform thousands of customers that their data had been breached TalkTalk said it was a genuine error as these customers had received the wrong notification regarding the incident and it has written to all affected people to apologise. However, this apology is very much too little too late.
If you are one of the 157,000 or 4,545 customers who have been affected by the TalkTalk data breach then you are entitled to make a data breach claim for compensation. All customers that were affected should now have been notified even though it was 4 years too late for some customers which TalkTalk should be held accountable for.
We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a collective group claim that will bring together the large number of TalkTalk customers. If you are a TalkTalk customer and received notification about involvement in the data breach, you are eligible to join our group claim.
Compensation is payable, not only for any specific financial or other losses you have incurred, but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you open to the risk of fraudulent activity.

The failure of TalkTalk to not only protect its customers data but to not inform a large number of customers that their data has been breached is very shocking. The BBC spoke to one of the 4,545 customers that had not been told about the breach until 2019. He revealed that his phone, email, and bank account had been bombarded with a series of fraudulent attacks since the incident and felt ‘extremely uncomfortable’ upon finding out that his bank account number, sort code, and other personal information could be easily found online.
TalkTalk have let their customers down in a huge way and customers are well within their right to claim compensation even if they have not experienced any direct financial loss. The emotional stress and anxiety for those who have had their details online for a number of years is significant and deserves compensation.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also holds a company or organisation to account for their actions. As a result, this will usually prompt them to take the necessary steps to boost their data security measures to ensure that such a breach cannot occur again.
When the ICO investigated the breach, they found multiple failings in TalkTalk’s security processes. As a reflection of the “seriousness of the event” in the words of the ICO they issued TalkTalk with a fine of £400,000.
