How was customer data breached at Virgin Media?

An unsecured database meant that personal information concerning Virgin Media customers and potential customers was accessed without permission. This was due to a database being incorrectly configured, so that it was unsecured and may have been accessible for a period of up to 10 months from April 2019.

The database in question was used to manage marketing information about existing and potential customers and included personal details such as:

  • technical and product information
  • details of any requests made via forms on the website
  • date of birth (in small number of cases)
