An unsecured database meant that personal information concerning Virgin Media customers and potential customers was accessed without permission. This was due to a database being incorrectly configured, so that it was unsecured and may have been accessible for a period of up to 10 months from April 2019.
The database in question was used to manage marketing information about existing and potential customers and included personal details such as:
The database was accessed on at least one occasion by an unknown person. It did not include any passwords or financial details, such as bank account numbers or credit card details.
The majority of those affected by the data breach were Virgin Media customers with television or fixed-line telephone accounts, although some Virgin Mobile customers may also have been affected. It is possible that the breach also included some potential customers who were referred by friends as part of a promotion.
If you are one of the 900,000 Virgin Media Customers who have been affected by the data breach then you are entitled to make a claim for compensation. Anyone affected by the data breach should have been notified by an email from Virgin Media.
We can put you in touch with expert data breach solicitors who are putting together a group litigation claim that will bring together the large number of Virgin Media customers as part of a collective claim. If you were a customer between April 2019 and 28 February 2020, it is possible that you have been affected by the data breach, so it is worth getting in touch with us.
Compensation is payable, not only for any specific losses you have incurred, but also for any distress caused by the data breach which could have left you open to the risk of phishing, nuisance calls and identity theft.
If you think you may have a valid Virgin Media data breach claim then get in touch with us and we will put you in touch with data breach experts who will make enquiries for you and confirm whether or not you have a valid claim worth pursuing.

Customers have the right to expect that any personal or financial data that they have shared with an organisation is properly handled, securely stored and not shared without permission. When data protection standards have fallen short and data has been breached, or in this case has been accessed by an unauthorised third party, you can make a data breach compensation claim.
Bringing a data breach claim not only gets you access to compensation, but also means that the company or organisation is held to account. As a result this will prompt them to take action and bring in more robust data security measures to ensure that such a breach does not happen again.
In the case of Virgin Media, the breach potentially affected up to 900,000 customers. We work with solicitors who are putting together a group claim whereby the large number of Virgin Media customers can be part of a collective claim for compensation. Even if the breach has not led to any financial losses to you, you are still entitled to claim compensation for distress that may have been caused by the data breach.
